The Payoff

    Optional

    Sauna

The observational signal is genuinely interesting, especially for cardiovascular outcomes — but it is not the same as proof of cause.

Enjoyable and potentially beneficial — but the strongest longevity claims remain observational.

    What the evidence supports

Frequent sauna use has been associated with lower cardiovascular and all-cause mortality in observational cohorts. Small trials suggest possible vascular benefits.

    Most relevant when

You enjoy heat exposure, tolerate it well and can use it consistently without displacing exercise, sleep or other higher-priority behaviours.

    Keep in perspective

Recent pooled randomised evidence found no significant effect across most cardiometabolic outcomes. Sauna is an optional adjunct, not ‘exercise in a box’.

    Safety

Avoid dehydration. Obtain guidance with low blood pressure, cardiovascular instability, pregnancy or medications affecting blood pressure and fluid balance.
