May improve short-term recovery, but it is not proven to extend life — and timing matters.
Cost and effort, honestly
What the evidence supports
Cold-water immersion may reduce perceived soreness and support short-term recovery after intense exercise.
Most relevant when
Rapid recovery matters more than maximising muscle or strength adaptation — for example, between closely scheduled sporting events.
Keep in perspective
There is no convincing human evidence that cold plunges extend life. Regular immersion immediately after resistance training may attenuate some strength adaptations.
Safety
Cold shock can sharply affect breathing, blood pressure and heart rhythm. Never plunge alone, and obtain medical guidance with cardiovascular disease.
