May modestly improve glucose and lipids, but evidence quality and product quality vary.
Cost and effort, honestly
What the evidence supports
Meta-analyses report modest improvements in glucose regulation and some lipid measures, particularly among people with type 2 diabetes or metabolic dysfunction.
Most relevant when
There is a defined metabolic target and its use has been reviewed alongside current medications.
Keep in perspective
Many trials are small, short and methodologically inconsistent. There is no convincing evidence that berberine prevents cardiovascular events or extends lifespan. It is not ‘nature’s metformin’.
Safety
Gastrointestinal effects, drug interactions and variable supplement quality matter. It is inappropriate during pregnancy and requires care alongside glucose-lowering medication.
